How should I do my strength training at the gym to get lean muscles?

So I am a 20 year old female. I have always had huge bulk thighs and calf’s, when I was in high school they were mostly muscle. Now, I am in my 3rd year of college and want to loose some weight. When I do weight training, do I want to do many reps of lighter weights or reps of heavy weights? I don’t want to get big bulky muscles I want long lean looking legs not like a body builder. What do I do to achieve this?

Woman CAN bulk up from high weight. low reps. genetics plays the role in the amount of slow twitch vs fast twitch fibers that you have. ( That is why in the 60′s Germany was kicking butt int he Olympics, they were “growing” better athletes. If she has slow twitch fibers she will be more prone to bulk up, just as if a man has more fast twitch than slow he will NOT bulk up as easily. But don’t worry, there is help for you, after all.

Go low weight LOTS of reps and work to fatigue. Implement cardio as well and don’t forget to rub out your muscles to rid them of lactic acid ( a multi vitamin will help to with an anti- oxidant)
